A million miles before Tennessee
No. 1246 rolled out of the Budd Company shops in 1953 — the same year Eisenhower took office and the Korean War ended. It started life as a Santa Fe baggage car, hauling freight across the Southwest before eventually passing to Amtrak. For decades it worked the American rail network, racking up miles through mountain passes, river valleys, and the long flat stretches of the interior plains. When Amtrak retired it, the car still had plenty of life left.
We brought No. 1246 to the depot and got to work turning it into something worth staying in. The steel frame, the galley layout, the bones of the car — all original. New windows are coming, sized to let the Tennessee hills in the way they deserve. The sense that you are sleeping inside a piece of American history — that part you cannot manufacture.
You can still feel the miles in the walls. That is not something you can build from scratch.
Sleeping quarters
Amtrak Jack sleeps up to six guests across a generously arranged set of sleeping spaces. The main sleeping area runs the width of the car, making the most of the Budd car's unusually wide interior — wider than most people expect when they first step aboard.
The layout suits a family, a group of friends, or a couple who simply want room to breathe. Every berth is made up fresh before your arrival, with quality linens and enough space to actually unpack and settle in for a few nights.
The galley
The galley kitchen runs along one wall of the car, fitted with an induction cooktop, a portable oven, a full-size refrigerator, and a complete set of cookware and utensils. Everything is stocked and ready when you arrive — coffee, pantry staples, and a welcome basket to get you started.
The galley window looks out over the property. There is no better way to start a morning than brewing coffee while the Tennessee hills come into the light. Cook a proper meal, eat at the table, and let the day unfold at its own pace.
The rear deck
The private rear deck extends off the back of the car and faces the CNO & TP rail corridor. It is a quiet spot — a pair of chairs, the sound of the wind in the trees, and a front-row seat to the trains rolling past. Bring a drink out in the evening and watch the light change over the tracks.
On clear nights the sky above the depot is genuinely dark. No city glow, and the traffic noise fades away. Just the stars and the occasional sound of a freight train on the main line — a reminder of where you are and what this place is about.
